Title: "Modeling Martian Dynamic Meteorology"

Abstract:

Better understanding of a unique (non-experimental) system usually comes
with repeated observations. However, because the system is unique, it is
usually impossible to change the conditions of the system and "re-run the
experiment" to see how the results differ under controlled changes. Also,
for very large unique systems (as is often the case in astronomy), it is
often impossible to make complete measurements of the system. Mathematical
and computer models are the solution to these problems, allowing us to
provide a more complete description of the unique system, especially for
variables that can't or won't be measured.

The atmosphere of Mars is one such large, unique system. My presentation
will focus on the use of a numerical atmospheric model (similar to a
terrestrial weather forecasting model) to more thoroughly study the Martian
atmosphere, especially its dynamic climate and weather. Deficiencies in the
current model, and improvements in a new model will be discussed. Uses of
the model for studying the dust and water cycles on Mars, as well as issues
of lander and human safety will be presented.
