The "sticky spots" are specifically exposed hydrogen bonds which, when "wrapped" by hydrophobic groups, lower the system's energy and increase its entropy by releasing the high-dielectric water molecules from the vicinity of the hydrogen bond. Experiments verified this first when it was shown that proteins with more than a very few exposed hydrogen bonds attach to lipid layers, while others do not. The most recent results indicate that one can design inhibitors with high specificity for a given protein by using the nonconserved character of the exposed hydrogen bonds, even within a family of proteins.
