 Optical spectroscopy is an efficient tool for determining the spectral types, i.e. effective temperatures of pre-main sequences stars, as well as for studying their accretion processes and winds. Broad-band optical and near infrared photometry can be used for determining their luminosities, as well as for studying several types of light variations related to pre-main sequence evolution and activities. Combining the observational results with evolutionary models of pre-main-sequence stars information on the star forming history of the molecular clouds can be obtained. I will show two examples for such studies.

(1) Study of the star forming history in Lynds 1333 using the above methods;
(2) Results of optical and spectroscopic monitoring of the eruptive star V1647 Ori during its 2004--2005 outburst.

 I will present my activities within the "Cold Universe" department of the CESR institute in Toulouse, France. This group has been participating to several balloon-borne projects such as Pronaos and Archeops and is now preparing the Planck and Herschel satellite projects. We have been studying the properties of the thermal dust emission of the Interstellar Medium for many years, from the Infra- Red to the millimeter. I will focus on the most recent developments, in particular a new model to interpret the FIR/submm emission spectrum of our Galaxy, and the observations of the Large Magelanic Cloud with the Spitzer satellite.
