Jupiter, friend or foe?

Abstract
|
The idea that Jupiter acts as a shield, easing the impact regime
on the Earth to such an extent that the evolution of life would be
impossible without it, is firmly entrenched in the minds of
scientists and the general public alike. Surprisingly, for such a
firmly held belief, little work has been carried out to study this
problem. At the Open University, working with Prof. Barrie Jones, I
am examining the true effect of Jupiter on the flux of impacts the
Earth experiences. In this seminar I intend to introduce the problem
and explain our current work, show our surprising first results, and
detail our future plans.
