Aircraft observation of typhoon LAN (2017) - T-PARCII project -

abstract: |
Violent wind and heavy rainfall associated with a typhoon cause huge disaster in East Asia including Japan. Many researches have projected increase of typhoon intensity with the climate change. This suggests that a typhoon risk is increasing in East Asia. However, the historical data of typhoon include large uncertainty. In particular, intensity data of the most intense typhoon category have larger error after the US aircraft reconnaissance of typhoon was terminated in 1987. Prediction of typhoon intensity also has a problem that its improvement has not been significant for the last 20~30 years. To improve these problems, in situ observations of typhoon using an aircraft are indispensable. The main objective of the present study is improvements of typhoon intensity estimations, and intensity and track forecasts. In this project, we perform aircraft observation of typhoon from 2017 to 2020 and the observed data are assimilated to numerical models. The main target area of the observation is to the south of Okinawa where a typhoon reaches maximum intensity and often changes its moving direction. On 21 October 2017, a very intense typhoon named LAN (2017) approached to the main islands of Okinawa and moved northward. An aircraft observation of Typhoon LAN was performed on 21 and 22 October. The aircraft penetrated into the eye of LAN and made dropsonde observations. The dropsonde observation was also performed around the eyewall of the typhoon. In the presentation, I will give an overview of the aircraft observation of Typhoon LAN.
